Museums & Libraries

Corfu has always been a cultural centre of distinction. The most notable of the island’s museums and libraries are to be found in the historic centre of Corfu Town.

  • The Archaeological Museum, is home to an interesting and extensive collection, clearly showing Corfu’s very rich archaeological heritage. The most commanding exhibit is the huge Gorgon Medusa sculpture, dating from the 6th century BC.
  • Museum of Paleopolis resides on Kanoni, within the residence of the Mon Repos estate. Displays finds from the ancient city of Corfu and extensive landscaped gardens which are home to 2 Doric temples.
  • Byzantine Museum of Antivouniotissa, a 15th century church converted into a museum featuring rare Byzantine art.
  • Museum of Asian art of Corfu is located in the Palace of St. Michael and St. George.It is home to more than 10000 exhibits, including porcelain from China and Japan, along with bronzes, paintings and sculptures.
  • Municipal Art Gallery situated in the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, contains a large and impressive collection of art works created by corfiot painters.
  • The banknotes museum, located in Aghios Spyridon square, features a complete collection of Greek banknotes from independence to the adoption of the euro in 2002.
  • Solomos Museum and the Corfiot Studies Society. Both situated in the house where Greece’s national poet once lived
  • The Reading Society of Corfu has an extensive library of old Corfu manuscripts and rare books.
  • The Serbian museum in Corfu houses rare exhibits about the Serbian soldiers’ tragic fate during the First World War.
